Murderess

This next story goes by many names: “Mind Over Murder,” “A Death is Caused,” but its best is the one Woolrich submitted it under, “Murderess,” published in Dime Detective in 1943. On a tropical island dependency, Pauline is unsatisfied in her marriage. After taking some advice from a friend, she devises a way to kill her husband: use his own worst fear against him until he’s terrorized to death. It’s a brutal tale, with an even more brutal twist in the final paragraphs, and one of Woolrich’s finest. Appearing in the collections If I Should Die Before I Wake (1946) and Angels of Darkness (1978), it’s only now getting the modern print attention it deserves, here, and in Centipede Press’s forthcoming collection, Walls That Hear You.
